A morte do General Soleimani, comandante da unidade Quds dos Guardas da Revolução do Irão, por ordem do Presidente americano, aumentou o nível de tensão entre os dois países e em todo o Médio Oriente. Como retaliação o Irão anunciou que iria abandonar os limites ao enriquecimento de urânio e lançou uma bateria de misseis contra bases americanas no Iraque. Por outro lado, receando um novo conflito em território nacional, o Parlamento iraquiano pediu a todas as forças estrangeiras para abandonarem o país.
